How to identify a connected downspout and route roof water away from the foundation.

Downspout Disconnection Guide for Ontario Homes

Look at where the pipe goes

A downspout that disappears into the ground may connect to a storm pipe, foundation drainage or an older combined connection. The outlet should be understood before it is changed.

Choose a safe discharge point

Water should move away from the foundation without crossing a walkway, affecting neighbouring property or returning toward the home.

Keep the route maintainable

Hinges, cleanouts or accessible outlets can make seasonal maintenance easier. Buried piping should use a route and outlet that can be inspected.

General information only: Site conditions and programme rules vary. Confirm the home, permit and official programme requirements before starting work.
